EXTERNAL LIME RENDER

Natural hydraulic lime (NHL) renders are breathable, flexible and available in a stunning range of colours, traditionally sponge finished and also able to achieve such styles as rough cast, trowel and scratch finish.

Lime renders can be installed onto brick, stone, blockwork, concrete and most other forms of stable masonry.

Lime render systems are generally specified where a more traditional patina aesthetic is desired and to answer local planning requirements in areas of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) for instance.

The lime render manufacturing process produces less carbon than cement based alternatives.
Furthermore, once installed lime render re-absorbs carbon thus lowering its carbon footprint further.

We have worked in partnership with several industry leading lime render system manufacturers for many years and are certified to offer their systems on a fully warrantied turnkey supply and install basis.

KEY SYSTEM BENEFITS

  • Available in a range of stunning traditional and contemporary colours
  • Flexibility to achieve most recognised styles of render finish
  • Reduced environmental impact over cement based alternatives
  • Breathable while protecting the building’s structure
  • Weatherproof and far more durable than traditional sand and cement renders
  • Ready-mixed with the addition of water the only requirement to install
  • Hand or machine applied to enable large areas to be completed
  • Greatly reduced program allowing trades to continue earlier and scaffolding to be off hired sooner
  • Bagged, palletised and wrapped for ease of delivery and safe storage on site

EXAMPLES OF EXTERNAL LIME RENDER

EXTERNAL LIME RENDER A BASIC GUIDE

LIME RENDER ONTO EXISTING MASONRY

Lime render is suitable for installation onto most forms of clean and stable masonry such as brick, stone and blockwork.

The amount of additional prep work required such as paint removal, priming and levelling is dictated by the condition of the existing substrate and this would be confirmed after a survey.

Lime render systems are generally applied in two layers allowing the first base coat layer to dry sufficiently before the finish layer is applied. A mesh is imbedded throughout the base coat layer to greatly improve strength and resistance to water penetration and movement. The final finish layer is then applied and finished in the chosen style.

If desired a lime system specific paint can be then be applied to decorate, equalise and protect the finish.

LIME RENDER ONTO NEW MASONRY

Lime render can be applied directly onto new brick and blockwork construction.

The masonry substrate should be constructed with a sufficient movement control design containing bed joint reinforcement and or expansion joints as per masonry manufacturers guidelines and in conjunction with BS 5628-3 code of practice for use of masonry and BS 6093 Code of practice for design of joints and jointing in building construction.

The key to a successful new build installation relies on the selection of a suitable block or brick type, the management and control of materials and workmanship during the construction of the substrate and the inclusion of a suitable movement control design to ensure that the blockwork performs as it should when constructed.

If desired a lime system specific paint can be then be applied to decorate, equalise and protect the finish.

LIME RENDER ONTO WOOD FIBRE BOARD

We install lime render on projects constructed using wood fibre boards such as Skanda – Savolit Plus.

Savolit Plus is the result of continuous research and the desire to provide the best environmentally friendly products and solutions. Savolit Plus wood wool boards are genuine natural panels and consist of long, strong wood fibres which are mineralised and bonded into panels. The raw timber originates from sustainably managed forests and is PEFC labelled. From production, installation, lifespan and decomposition (recycling) Savolit Plus panels do not pose a risk to the environment. Savolit Plus wood wool boards are 100% recyclable.

If desired a lime system specific paint can be then be applied to decorate, equalise and protect the finish.

TRADITIONAL ROUNDED CORNERS

Lime render can be installed with bead-less curved window and door reveals to achieve a truly traditional finished appearance, to enable this process the masonry must be cut back across the angles to allow for the render to sweep around gradually and still maintain its required thickness.

In the case of fully rendered homes, there should also be a provision for breaks/joints in the design such as vertical expansion joints behind down pipes or against chimney breasts as the lack of corner beading means there would be nowhere safe for the installers to stop to drop back and begin the sponge finishing processes.
